Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced Subsidiary GCE in Mathematics

UPDATED 20161012 13:37:16

Advanced level Mathematics comprises a mixture of 4 different areas one of which must be Pure. Pure Mathematics—This is fundamental to ALL further study in Mathematics; it is the 'building kit' which allows students to investigate mathematical situations. Topics studied include: functions, equations, trigonometric ratios, differentiation and integration. Mechanics—In Mechanics we are interested in analysing real life problems and working out what happens in physical situations. We use the Pure Maths to analyse movement of objects. Newton's Laws of Motion form the basis of the majority of the course. Statistics—Basic techniques of probability and statistics are part of GCSE Mathematics and are used in GCSE Statistics. At A level the theory of probability allows a more careful analysis of data and choosing the size of the sample/deciding on the significance of the results becomes more important. Decision Mathematics—Decision Maths looks at how to solve problems involving networks (e.g. computer, road, rail, telephone). A level and AS level courses are made from a combination of the following modules: Pure Mathematics C1, C2, C3, C4 Further Pure Mathematics FP1, FP2, FP3 Mechanics M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 Statistics S1, S2, S3, S4 Decision Mathematics D1, D2 Combinations offered: A Level Mathematics C1, C2, C3, C4 + 2 from the above. AS Level Mathematics (one year course) C1, C2 + 1 from the above. AS Level Further Mathematics (taken in year 13) FP1 + any 2 other than C1 – C4. AS Further Mathematics is only offered to the most able mathematicians and often depends on staffing
