Physics courses are as appropriate for young women as young men. Physics is a relevant science for the enquiring mind. The overall aims of the course are to develop student interest in science, particularly physics, whilst preparing them for employment or further studies. Relevant abilities and skills are developed to encourage safe and efficient practice. The course aims to develop the key skills of communication, application of number, working with others, problem solving and information technology. The right attitude is important - accurate, precise work is essential, objectivity, integrity, enquiry, initiative and inventiveness are all encouraged. You will need to be a competent mathematician and it is strongly recommended that you study AS mathematics in addition to physics. If you are not studying AS Level mathematics in Year 12 you will be required to commit yourself to a course of study which will develop your mathematical skills and enable you to cope with these aspects of the physics course. Experience has shown that less able mathematicians obtain lower grades in physics than those who are mathematically competent. A physics qualification is highly regarded and gives you a wide range of career choices. The course is based around practical activity and problem solving.
