At AS Unit 1: An introduction to a range of global natural hazards and a key focus on climate change, climatic hazards and global warming. It also examines today’s rapid economic changes which are impacting on people across the globe, and the related international issues of population change and migration. Unit 2: Detailed studies of contrasting coastal environments, exploring competing and conflicting land uses and an evaluation of the pressures created by development. It considers how vulnerable and valuable coastlines face a growing risk from erosion and flooding. It also explores why some places are in need of Rebranding and what strategies are used to improve areas. Fieldwork remains an integral part of Unit 2 and 4 and there are a wide range of research opportunities for all 4 units. At A2 The use and management of resources is a key issue for geographers in today’s world. Many resources are finite, and rising consumption means that difficult decisions over the use of resources will have to be taken more frequently. The topics include Energy Security, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity Under Threat, Superpower Geographies, Bridging the Development Gap and The Technological Fix. Students will also do a unit of work which focuses on independent research skills. Their range of research skills will be developed in preparation for writing a report on a current issue which has global significance. The skills developed in this unit are valued in further education as well as the world of work
