Geography

UPDATED 20151001 09:35:41

Geography is an excellent subject for acquiring a variety of skills including research, problem-solving, critical thinking, statistical analysis, ICT skills, decision-making, group and individual presentation skills, teamwork, data collection and presentation. The answer is what can you not do! Geography ‘A’ Level is an academically strong subject suitable for those doing a broad humanities course at ‘A’ Level (e.g. Economics, Politics, Sociology, History or RS), Sciences or Arts. For those students who enjoy Geography and want to study Geography at degree level, some students go on to a Geography specific career, often after completing a Geography BA or BSc followed by a masters qualification in a specialist area in Geography e.g. Sustainability Consultant, Development Worker, Volcanologist, Hydrologist, urban regeneration work, Town Planner, Transport Planner and many jobs in the ‘Green Economy’. Maybe more commonly, many Geography graduates don’t necessarily use their ‘Geography’ specifically, but are popular graduates with employers (reportedly Geographers are supposed to be the second most employable graduates) in Accountancy, Marketing, Finance, Property, Media, Local Government and the Civil Service. Geography is recognised so highly due to the range of skills we practise – literacy, numeracy, GIS, data base work, surveying, field work and group work.
