RS, Philosophy & Ethics AS: The study of RS, Philosophy and Ethics develops our ability to make sense of ourselves and our surroundings. Philosophers apply critical thinking to questions of values and beliefs in order to understand reality, clarify the nature of interactions between individuals and society, and come to terms with the problems of existence and ultimate values. Different schools of thought in economics, history, psychology, and education are based upon differences in philosophy. Political and religious beliefs and codes of ethic are based on philosophical assumptions. Students who study philosophy and ethics engage in the examination of their own beliefs, the resolution of conflicts, the search for a purpose to life, and the development of a basis for ethical decisions Students study both philosophy and ethics. Philosophy involves thinking about what philosophers since Plato and Aristotle have said about the existence of God. Students investigate the arguments put forward by key philosophers as well as developing their own. In the ethics parts of the course we study the complexities of ethical language, such as the problems associated with defining ‘good’. We discuss issues of conscience and freedom, sexual ethics and war and peace. Students research the origins of moral codes in existence today and develop their own ethical values. Religious Studies at AS is divided into two modules: Foundations which incorporates Philosophy of Religion & Ethics and Investigations. During the course students have to engage with complex philosophical ideas including arguments for the existence of God, the cosmological argument and the design argument. They explore the problem of evil & suffering and look at miracles. In the ethics part of the course students cover religion & morality, different ethical theories and look at applied ethics including sexual ethics and issues relating to war and peace – all very relevant to contemporary society.
