This new two year qualification has four themes: Theme 1: Introduction to markets and market failure You will learn about the role of economics in society, about how prices are set in the market place and about markets that don’t work in the public interest, such as the energy market. This includes studying the role of government in trying to make such markets work better. Theme 2: The UK economy – performance and policies You will learn about economic indicators such as inflation, unemployment and the balance of payments and see how economists use these in order to assess the success of the UK economy. You will research and evaluate action taken by governments to improve the UK economy, such as Quantitative Easing. Theme 3: Business behaviour and the labour market You will learn how firms seek to achieve their various objectives by managing their costs and revenue. You will research different market structures, including oligopoly and monopoly and evaluate their impact on society. You will learn how governments have tried to influence the labour market, including with the National Minimum Wage. Theme 4: A global perspective You will build upon Theme 2 and develop an understanding of developments in the global economy, including the Eurozone, the US, China and India. You will research the impact of Foreign Direct Investment in sub Saharan African countries. You will explore the role of the financial markets, banks and central banks, both positive and negative, in the light of the 2008 financial crash.
