The Product Design course is one that builds on the GCSE course in Design and Technology. You will cover a range of practical activities that will build up your confidence, skills and knowledge, working with a range of materials you may not have had the opportunity to use at Key Stage 4. This course will give access to higher education courses and career opportunities within a range of design and manufacturing industries. Learners will study the following areas: • Learning through designing and making • Design and manufacture • Design and making practice This course contains both examination and coursework elements. 50% Coursework - Two major projects Students will carry out a project in each year of the course. These projects require a client for each student who can guide them through the research, design and manufacturing stages. Previously, students have made learning aids for children with learning needs, electronic warning systems for riversides and various architectural proposals and specific storage projects. Any project can be carried out within reason but it must solve a legitimate problem. 50% Examination - Two written examinations The examinations will require students to write in depth about materials, processes and the wider picture of design. Students will need to have excellent knowledge of materials, their applications and how they can be manufactured into parts and products.
