A Level History

UPDATED 20161027 12:41:32

History is considered a ‘Gold Standard’ subject. It develops skills of research, analysis, judgement, explanation and argument. These are the abilities sought in a range of university courses and many top careers, from the Law and Economics, to Heritage, Media and Management. Above all, however, History is fascinating. If you are interested in politics, warfare, economics, culture, even psychology, this is the subject for you. . Today, universities and employers look for something different in the students who apply to them. The majority of History students study the 20th century at A Level; at Bede Academy we want students to stand out from the crowd and to learn something new. Our A Level, therefore, is special: we study Medieval History. Medieval History has all the danger, drama, murder and romance of a soap opera – and all for real. Additionally, taking a course in Early History gives students a basis to study any later period and helps them to better understand the way our world works today. In studying History at A level students will develop a range of historical skills and consider the work of a wide range of historians. There is no hiding from the fact that History is a ‘written subject’, and writing skills will improve dramatically when studying this course. The Bede Academy History course covers: • The Age of the Crusades, 1071-1204 • The Angevin Kings of England, 1154-1216 • Coursework on a History topic of the student's choice. This allows students to pursue a more personal interest.
