A Level Economics

UPDATED 20161027 12:34:58

Economics is a well-respected academic subject that seeks to explain our financial behaviour and that of companies and governments. You are likely to study the subject successfully, if you enjoy and do well in Mathematics and English, and if you have an interest in current affairs and the news. Economics A Level is highly regarded by universities. As a traditional subject, success in Economics demonstrates an ability to write fluently, handle data confidently, and use high-level analytical skills. It also provides a level of understanding of current affairs, and has links to Mathematics, Politics, Geography, Psychology, Business, and Modern History. Economics A Level students commonly go on to study an Economics or Business-related degree and pursue a wide variety of careers in finance, accounting, journalism, marketing, commercial disciplines and general management. Economics is divided into looking at how individual industries behave (‘Microeconomics’), and how the economy as a whole operates (‘Macroeconomics’). Microeconomic questions include: • Why are some goods more expensive than others? • Do businesses need to be regulated by government, and if so, how? Macroeconomic questions include: • Why are people unemployed and are there any solutions? • Should the current government be so keen on reducing its budget deficit? • Why did China’s economy grow at 10% per annum for 30 years while the UK’s only managed 2.5% per annum? The course is examined through essays and data response. There is also a 20% Applied Mathematics component where students have to work out and explain percentages and ratios within an Economics context.
