A Level Business Studies

UPDATED 20161027 12:32:54

A Level Business Studies has been developed to build on skills students develop at Key Stage 4, however there are no previous knowledge requirements for this specification. The course builds on, but is not dependent on, students having studied Business Studies. The course is structured into four themes and consists of three externally examined papers. An A Level in Business is an academic qualification, which also has a strong practical application. It is a very popular subject at university, with good career prospects in: accounting, personnel, marketing, operations and general management. Theme 1: Marketing and People Helps develop an understanding of: customer needs, the market, marketing mix and strategy, managing people, entrepreneurs and leaders. Theme 2: Managing Business Activities Helps develop an understanding of: finance, financial planning, managing finance, resource management, external influences. Theme 3: Business Decisions and Strategy Helps develop an understanding of: business objectives and strategy, business growth, decision-making, assessing competitiveness, managing change. Theme 4: Global Business Helps develop an understanding of: globalisation, global markets, business expansion, global marketing, and global industries. The four themes are taught and then assessed at the end of two years by three externally examined papers, each of two hours, and each consisting of two data response questions. Themes 1 and 2 look through knowledge of core business concepts. Themes 3 and 4 require students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues. Students are encouraged to use a probing, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of business. At AS Level students will study themes 1 and 2. At A2 Level students will build on their knowledge of themes 1 and 2 and study themes 3 and 4. Assessments for A2 will include students showing their previous knowledge of themes 1 and 2.
