If you’ve ever wondered how films are made, how adverts work, if we can believe the news we hear, and why you can always predict storylines in soaps… then you’re beginning to think like a media analyst! Choose Media Studies, and you’ll have the chance to discuss and analyse a wide range of media texts. AS Level Module 1 (50%) - Investigating Media This unit has two sections. In section A students will be expected to investigates a wide range of media texts to familiarise themselves with media language and media codes and conventions. Section B provides the opportunity to apply the theory of section A to a cross-media study looking at topics such as Broadcast or Film fiction, Documentary, Lifestyle, Sport and Music. Module 2 (50%) – Creating Media In this unit students will produce two linked media artefacts taken from two of the three media platforms studied in Unit 1: Investigating Media, with a single, accompanying evaluation and pre-production materials for both pieces. In this part of the course students could be producing film trailers, documentaries, websites, pod casts, magazines or news articles. A2 Level MEST 3: Critical Perspectives (50% - exam) MEST 3 requires students to demonstrate their understanding of the key Media concepts, and also to develop and formulate their approach to the media and the role of the media in today’s society. The examination for Unit 3 will take the form of a two hour examination paper. MEST 4: Research and Production (50% - coursework) In this synoptic unit candidates will build on their skills from AS study to investigate a media theme/text in more depth and realise a production piece reflecting this research. The unit has two sections: 1. Critical Investigation (48 marks) 2. Linked production piece (32 marks) Students will research and produce one critical investigation and one linked production.

Paper 2 What's assessed Questions will focus on the analysis of media products, through the lens of the theoretical framework. Students will be expected to refer to the Close Study Products (CSPs) provided by AQA and other products they have studied. They will also be expected to demonstrate understanding of the contexts in which the products were created. How it's assessed: Written exam: 2 hours 35% of A-level. Non-exam assessment: Creating a media product ; What's assessed; Application of knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework. Practical skills relating to the media format of their choice. Cross-Media Products made for an intended audience.
