A Level Sociology

UPDATED 20150930 16:33:23

Sociology is a social science which studies human beings and the way in which they behave in society. It investigates how society affects you, your behaviour and your opportunities. Sociology considers relationships between people, their social groups and institutions around them. In other words does social class, gender, ethnicity, type of family, school you go to, influence you? It is a subject full of ideas and lots of debates because there is no correct answer to a sociological question. However, you will need to support your argument. A genuine interest in people, reading more widely and contemporary awareness is essential for success in this subject. Over the 2 year course students will study compulsory modules on Education, Theory and Methods, Methods in Context, Crime and Deviance and Research Methods. There are also two optional topic areas to study - Families and Households and Beliefs in Society. Studying sociology gives you an insight into social and cultural issues. It helps you understand yourself and others better and make sense of the society we live in. It helps you develop a more critical approach to understanding issues like education, poverty and crime. Sociology is a valued academic subject for university and it is a great choice for those who would like to follow a career in medicine, teaching, nursing or social work. Sociology is also useful in a number of other careers such as marketing, advertising, PR, law and journalism. Students who study sociology often also study business studies, English, history and psychology.
