Mathematics at Key Stage 5 can be studied in two ways. Students choose to study a single A level in mathematics or two A levels in mathematics and further mathematics. A level mathematics is made up of three modules. These include two pure mathematics modules covering areas such as calculus, geometry, sequences and series, and trigonometry. Students will then study an applied mathematics module which covers statistics and mechanics. A level further mathematics is taught alongside the A level mathematics course and requires students to study a further four modules. These include two modules of further pure mathematics and two more applied modules covering statistics, mechanics or decision mathematics. A level mathematics is ideal for students who enjoy the subject and wish to study it beyond GCSE in support of any future university, college or work application. A level further mathematics is frequently studied by students with a real flair for mathematical thinking who are considering further education in a mathematics based subject.
