The aim of the course is for students to develop an understanding of the holistic nature of art and design, which could include specialising in textiles, photography or fine art. AS Art should be seen as a natural progression from GCSE. The specifications require students to develop a practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of relevant materials, processes, ideas, genres and styles. Skills will be developed through observation, research, recording and analysis. Students will be encouraged to use their knowledge and understanding of the work of others to develop and extend thinking and inform their own work. Ideas will be generated and explored through enquiry that involves experimenting with a wide range of materials and techniques in an independent way. AS or Year 1 (2 units) Coursework Portfolio Externally Set Assignment This course is very demanding and students will require self-motivation and a passion for creativity. There is an expectation that students will take up the opportunity to extend their skills, knowledge and experiences through self -initiated gallery visits. Students wishing to study art and design at higher education usually progress to a one year art and design foundation diploma at either The University of Northampton or Tresham College. Following this, students can then apply for degree level courses in a vast array of art, craft and design specialists.
