A Level Art

UPDATED 20161027 12:30:43

Art offers opportunities to use your creativity to express yourself. You will develop your understanding of creative processes, your ability to observe and to think, to solve problems and to communicate in a visual way. It will enable you to work independently and to make your own discoveries by exploring ideas, other artists’ work, different materials and techniques. Fine Art gives you skills and knowledge to create personal and imaginative work with substance and depth of meaning. The course is split into two components in Year 12 (AS Level) and a further two in Year 13 (A Level). Component 1 at AS Level uses a selected broad theme as a basis for workshop-based skill sessions to allow students to explore and create in response to the four assessment objectives against which their work is assessed throughout the course. Component 3 in Year 13 builds upon this as a personal study unit whereby students select their own starting point and preferred genres of study, with an increasing focus on a strong written element to the project (1000-3000 words). Components 2 and 4 respectively, for both AS and A Level (Years 12 and 13), are externally set assignments where students must select a question/starting point from a paper set by the examination board which culminates in a timed response (10 hours in Year 12, 15 hours in Year 13) under examination conditions. At both levels, Component 1 and 3 are worth 60% of the overall grade awarded and Component 2 and 4, 40%. AS Levels are a standalone qualification in Year 12 and do not contribute to an A Level grade in Year 13. All units require students to show contextual understanding of other artists’ work, including concise but coherent annotation demonstrating a command of subject-specific vocabulary. Successful A Level Art students are expected to be creative, adaptive and resilient, with strong traditional drawing skills, demonstrating a high level of independence and a passion for Art.
