Sociology

UPDATED 20161012 10:02:59

Sociology is the study of society. It is a very wide ranging academic study, and in the AS we focus on issues such as what culture means, our norms and values and where they come from, the influence of the media on how society works and the causes and consequences of inequality of society. Course details We follow the OCR Year 1/AS Specification. There are two equally weighted parts of the course: Component 1: Culture, identity and values; sociology of media. Component 2: Research methods; the study of inequality in society. Examinations There is no coursework. For the AS, two 90 minute exams will be taken in May 2018. Students who pass the AS will have the option of continuing to the second year of the course and so taking the full A-Level. Details of what we do in Year 13 are available on request. Teaching and learning Obviously an interest in understanding society is very important for this course. There is a lot of room for discussion and practical learning, but some basic book learning to do as well. Sociology and other subjects Sociology has been combined successfully with the full range of other subjects offered by Diss Sixth Form, including the sciences, other social sciences such as psychology, and arts-based subjects. The Future Sociology is a fully recognised subject in terms of university entrance. An A Level in sociology stands anyone in good stead who is going to choose a subject in higher education which is based on an understanding of people. The skills developed in sociology such as the ability to think independently about complex issues and express yourself clearly, together with the ability to problem solve as an individual and as part of a group, will be useful in any course or career with A-Level entry requirements.
