You will examine a wide range of media texts taken from broadcast, print and e-media, using appropriate analytical tools and language in order to understand how media texts are constructed. You will explore how social/cultural groups, events and issues are represented in media texts and how audiences respond to and interpret those texts. This course explores the world 'constructed' by media texts from the representations of men in music, the police in TV crime dramas, women in fashion magazines and ethnic minorities in film. It engages in debates about how audiences respond to media texts and how the media industries respond to audience expectation and demand. The course also explores the practical application of theory through a significant course work component which offers the opportunity to acquire expertise in a range of media technologies e.g. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere. Past students have produced music videos, print marketing packages, documentaries, film openings and film trailers.
