This course offers candidates the opportunity of developing the essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological thought and methods. It is designed to encourage candidates to demonstrate the application of a range of skills and consider the integration of sociological themes. The themes should be understood and applied to particular substantive areas of Sociology. These themes are to be interpreted broadly as threads running through many areas of social life and are not therefore be regarded as discrete topics: • Socialisation, culture and identity • Social differentiation, power and stratification. Assessments employ a variety of familiar question types, including short answer and extended writing/essays, which target: • Knowledge and understanding • Application • Analysis and evaluation.
