Studying a Modern Language to AS Level will help you to develop and build upon your knowledge, understanding and cultural appreciation by using authentic spoken and written sources through a stimulating course of study. The qualification is made up of three components: Component 1 is a speaking assessment (30%); Component 2 combines listening, reading and translation (50%); Component 3 assesses your response to a literary text or a film, studied in French or Spanish (20%); Components 1 and 2 will draw on material which covers two main areas of interest: travel and exploration and contemporary youth culture. These are divided into the following sub-themes: • Travel and exploration: advantages of travelling, working and studying abroad; the impact of travel on society; and local culture and festivals in France/ Spain and French/Spanish speaking countries; • Contemporary youth culture: entertainment, music and the arts; media and digital culture; and youth sub-cultures, trends and personal identity.
