Career and further study The qualification is intended to carry UCAS points and is recognised by Higher Education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses, for example: BSc (Hons) Nursing; BA and BSc (Hons) Social Work; BSc (Hons) Midwifery and Nursing. Students can also progress directly to employment, as the transferable knowledge, understanding and skills will give successful students an advantage in applying for a range of entry level roles, or ‘school leaver’ industry training programmes and Higher Apprenticeships in areas related to Health and Social Care. Course description This two year qualification is wide-ranging and equivalent in size to 3 A-levels. Students will study human lifespan development; working in health and social care; anatomy and physiology in health and social care; enquiries into current research in health and social care; meeting individual care and support needs; work experience in health and social care; principles of safe practice in health and social care; promoting public health; sociological perspectives; psychological perspectives; supporting individuals with additional needs; assessing children’s needs and development; nutritional needs. The qualification gives learners experience of the breadth and depth that will prepare them for further study and employment in the health and social care sector. Learners will apply their health and social care understanding to real life organisations by completing 100 hours of compulsory health and social care work experience in settings that work with infants, elderly and people with learning disabilities. Learners will need to be self-motivated, be able to work independently and be confident users of ICT. They will need to be able to research effectively and be organised in order to meet coursework deadlines.
