This course is designed to engage students in the subject of Geography, which offers so much to our understanding of our planet. The course is broken down into 3 main elements: Dynamic physical processes; Global connections and change; and an independent fieldwork investigation. AS is 100% based on examination and A2 is 80% examination and 20% fieldwork investigation. The three main study areas are: 1. Dynamic Physical Processes This looks at how physical processes affect the planet and the impact that humans have on them. At AS, studies include Coastal Processes and Change, as well as and Geographical Hazards. In addition, at A2, students study Earth’s Life Support Systems and Resource Security. 2. Global Connections and Change This area of study focuses on changes to the human world and how areas are connected or disconnected. It examines how places and spaces are made, redefined and regenerated. The AS includes Changing Spaces and the A2 includes the studies of Global Connections and Interactions, through contemporary topics like Migration and Power. 3. Independent Investigation Both AS and A2 require students to attend a residential fieldtrip and be able to demonstrate an understanding of fieldwork techniques and geographical skills. The course includes a residential fieldtrip to Swanage and Bournemouth, as well as trips to London and the local area. An optional trip to Iceland or Italy is also run by the department.
