Students will complete three units in the first year and three units in the second year, all of which are assessed by coursework. The 6 areas of study include: • Dispute Solving in the Legal Systemstudents will understand the difference between civil and criminal law, how this determines in which courts disputes are resolved and the representation received in the resolution process • Understanding Law Making – The overall unit aim is to provide students with an understanding to how laws are made, the importance and their impact Aspects of Legal Liability – The aim of this unit is to understand the offence of being negligent and the principles of criminal liability, together with knowledge of damages and the aims of sentencing • Unlawful Homicide and Police Powers – The aim of this unit is to give students skills to apply the law on murder, an understanding of the law on manslaughter, together with knowledge of police powers with respect to arrest and detention • Aspects of Property Offences and Police Powers – This unit will give students the understanding and skills in relation to property offences, fraud, criminal damage and police search powers • Aspects of Employment Law – The unit will introduce students to employment law as it applies to businesses. Students will apply their knowledge to various employment situations and consider the meaning and effects of contracts of employment
