AS-level Computer Science

UPDATED 20150930 11:55:20

Computer Science is a practical subject where learners can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems. It is less based on ICT and more on computer programming and algorithms, mathematical skills used to express computational laws and processes, and problem solving using computers. It is a natural successor to GCSE Computing, although there is no requirement to have done GCSE Computing to be able to take this course. Computer Science will above all else be relevant to the modern and changing world of computing; it has an open source ethos allowing multiple programming languages that meet the needs of the course to be used. It is an intensely creative subject that combines invention and excitement. It values computational thinking helping you to develop the skills to solve problems, write programs, design systems, understand the power and limits of human and machine intelligence and create your own project in Year 2. A-level Computer Science is made up of 80% written assessment at the end of the course, and 20% on a project.
