You will complete two exams and one coursework unit. Exam 1: Exploring Language Question 1: Language under the microscope Exploring the effect of lexical choices and grammatical features in a short sample of written text. Question 2: Writing about a topical language issue Your own writing to present and explore your ideas and attitudes towards language issues. A real-world purpose, form and audience for the writing will be given in the task. Question 3: Comparing and contrasting texts Exploring linguistic connections and comparisons between different modes of texts, for example, in spoken and written texts, spontaneous and crafted speech or different forms of spoken English, which could include British regional dialects. At least one spoken text will be included. Exam 2: Dimensions of linguistic variation Question 1: Child language acquisition Analysing a transcript involving spoken language by children between 0 and 7 years of age. Question 2: Language in the media Analysing a media text and applying such theories as language and gender, technology or power. Question 3: Language change Comparing two texts from different times. Texts chosen will be from the 1600s to the present day. Coursework • An individual research project and write-up. (2000-2500 words) • An academic poster summarising the conclusions of the project (750-1000 words)
