At AS Latin you read part of Ovid’s entertaining Metamorphoses about how Pentheus could not cope with women worshipping Bacchus, the god of wine, along with part of a powerful political speech by Cicero in favour of Pompey the Great. The other unit is a language paper, with a full vocabulary list. Translation into Latin is not compulsory. At A2 in Latin we study texts like Tacitus’ account of the mad emperor Nero and the fire at Rome, along with the moving romance between Dido and Aeneas in Virgil’s powerful poetry. There is a growing emphasis on understanding the context and background of the literature as well as its translation and critical appreciation.
