A Level Physics is examined by 3 written papers at the end of year 13 covering all the work completed over the 2 years. Each paper is 2hours long. Papers 1 and 2 each consist of 85 marks of short and long answer questions and are both worth 34% of the A level. Paper 3 consists of 80 marks and is 32% of the A level. Paper 1 assesses knowledge on measurement and their errors, particles and radiation, waves, mechanics and materials, electricity, and part of topic 6 which is circular motion. Question style is in the form of short, long and multiple choice. Paper 2 assessed the rest of topic 6, further mechanics, 7, fields and their consequences, and 8, nuclear physics with assumed knowledge from the previous topics. Question style is in the form of short, long and multiple choice. Paper 3 assesses practical technique and data analysis, and an optional topic. In addition, students are required to carry out a minimum of 12 practicals over years 12 and 13 and must keep a practical book which includes all their practicals including results tables, data analysis, methods, conclusions. Students are then awarded a pass (or fail ) for their practical work.
