Following the new Linear format, the course builds on the knowledge gained at AS to look at change and development over a longer period of time in both Britain and Russia. In addition, students will complete a 3000-3500 word piece of coursework on the United States after the declaration of independence, through the Civil War and finally reconstruction to examine the extent to which the country developed in the way its original founders intended. The coursework will combined knowledge and understanding with analysis of a range of sources which students find for themselves through extensive research and intended to foster independence, self-reliance and resilience in their approach to their studies, providing an excellent grounding for any academic undergraduate course. For the final examinations, students look at change and continuity in Britain across the period 1951-2007 in society, politics and economics. Similarly, the Russian History course looks at the radical changes in Russia between 1855 and 1964 covering the fall of the Tsars and emergence of Communism under Lenin, Stalin and finally Khrushchev in the darkest days of the Cold War. The course is designed to cover over 200 years of History and allows students to gain an understanding of developments in a range of countries including their own.
