A-level Biology is examined by three written papers at the end of year 13 covering all the work completed over the 2 years. Each paper is 2 hours long. Papers 1 and 2 each consist of 91 marks of short and long answer questions as well as extended response and comprehension questions. They are both worth 35% of the A level. Paper 3 consists of 78 marks and is 30% of the A level. Paper 1 assesses all four AS units: Biological molecules, cells, Organisms exchange substances with their environment and Genetic information, variation & relationships between organisms. Paper 2 assesses all four A2 units: Energy transfers in and between organisms, Organisms respond to changes on the internal and external environments, Genetics, populations & ecosystems and The control of gene expression. Both papers assess relevant practical skills. Paper 3 assesses any content from all 8 topics via structured questions that include practical techniques, a critical analysis of experimental data and a 25 mark essay from a choice of 2 titles. Students are required to carry out a minimum of 12 practicals over the 2 years. In addition to the written exams, which determines their A level Grade, students must keep a practical book which includes all their practicals including results tables, data analysis, methods, conclusions. Students are then awarded a pass (or fail ) for their practical work.
