This course will appeal to those students who: have a strong interest in the world of design; enjoy studying an imaginative, creative and ever changing subject; like to keep up to date with new technology; like to investigate and solve problems; enjoy practical subjects. Unit 1 – Materials, Components and Application - Examined unit in which students will study issues to enhance their knowledge and understanding of a range of materials and be able to apply this to different contexts including: Materials and components – wide ranging materials and their applications; Design and market influences – environmental issues, ergonomics and anthropometric data, consumer issues; Processes and manufacturing – fabrication methods. Unit 2 – Learning through Designing and Making. In this unit you develop your creative, technical and practical skills through product investigation, design and manufacturing solutions. You will analyse selected products to test performance, materials and quality; select a focus for ‘blue sky thinking’ design work; develop manufacturing skills by selecting a product which combines a wide range of hand and CAD techniques. This results in a final portfolio and product.
