Physics A Level

UPDATED 20150930 10:08:29

A Physics qualification enables us to understand the world around us. It covers everything from the formation of the universe to the structure of the tiniest elementary particles of matter. Studying Physics will help improve your understanding of the developments of Science and Engineering in our country and throughout the world. It will also help develop your scientific processing skills, in particular the ability to solve a problem in stages using a wide range of scientific and mathematical techniques. Students who study AS and A2 Physics often describe it as a challenging but extremely rewarding subject. AS Level Physics A (7407) At AS level the following topics are covered: Measurements and their errors covering limitation of physical measurements and estimation of physical quantities Particles and Radiation including the theory of particle physics and quantum phenomena Waves covering the theory of progressive and stationery waves and also interference and diffraction Mechanics and Materials looking at Forces, Energy and Momentum and also Materials Electricity Building upon the GCSE topics in electricity AQA Specification A2 Level Physics A (7408) A2 Physics is split into the following topics: Further Mechanics and Thermal Physics covering periodic motion and thermal physics Nuclear Physics Including radioactivity and the theory of decay, nuclear instability, mass and energy. Plus an option topic chosen by the Academy Physics Department. Advanced Level Physics aims to provide students with a thorough knowledge of Physics and to develop, in particular, the scientific and problem solving processing skills that are so important to our technological development. Students who take Physics often say it equips them with the study skills required to tackle other subjects.
