Tap Dancing for Fun and Fitness for Beginners

UPDATED 20161122 13:47:50

Tap dancing is a fun, challenging and rhythmical way of keeping fit. It has evolved as an American dance form, popularised throughout the world, with its origins coming from African dance, Irish dance and clog dancing. The dancer uses their feet to strike the floor, beating out different rhythms, with dancers wearing tap shoes which have small metal plates on the toe and heel to give distinctive sound. Tap dance is a theatrical art form often seen on stage in musicals. You will participate in a weekly one hour tap dance class, where you will learn technical exercises, travelling steps and dance sequences incorporating all the steps you have learnt. In the Beginners course you will learn the importance of good posture and build your tap vocabulary to include steps such as “shuffles”, “cramp rolls” and “paradiddles”, all the while developing your sense of rhythm. In the Improver’s course you will expand your knowledge to include more complex steps, such as time steps, buffalos and waltz steps with greater emphasis on rhythm and tempo changes. In the Advanced course you will consolidate all of these steps, adding even more complex steps such as “wings” and “maxifords”. You will also build these into challenging routines. No previous experience is needed for the Beginner’s class – it’s open to everyone! It is recommended that you have some experience of tap dancing, perhaps as a child or a teenager if you are thinking of enrolling on the Improver and Advanced courses. It is also recommended that you invest in a pair of tap shoes if you participate in any of these courses, although we do suggest coming along and trying a couple of lessons before buying a pair, if in any doubt. Tap dancing is for everyone – so what you are waiting for? Dig out those tap shoes and get tapping!!
