This course will be run as a series of workshops. During each session we will do writing exercises to promote creativity. We will look at prose, poetry and non-fiction by established writers as a source of inspiration. Students will be expected to bring their own work for discussion each week. Topics we will cover:  Through the eyes of the reader – how to use language effectively and shoe stories.  Through the eyes of a child – How did you see the world when you were four/five/six/seven or eight?  Inventing character – Use a set of questions to invent the private/public life of…  Story seeds – From your notebook choose an idea. Develop a story/poem/play etc.  Dialogue only – Write a short sketch about a misunderstanding.  What makes a poem – Looking at the work of Carol Ann Duffy  How does Haibun work? – Heightened prose and Haiku. Reading examples.  Transformation – Rewrite one of your pieces in another form ie: poem to prose/prose to play.  Using Clothes to Inspire – Please bring an item of clothing.  Presentation morning – A morning given to students work, revised and new! This term there will be a new feature: You will be expected to write a short critique of a piece of writing of your choice (150 words). Each week I will ask one person to share their critique. Please bring copies of the passage/poem etc. and copies of your response. Please also remember to keep your notebook with you this term as you will be generating seeds for writing (see session four).
