To what extent is the government to blame for the economic crisis? Government and Politics is the study of how the UK Government works and how it affects ordinary people; it is also the study of UK government policy and its effectiveness. The first year of the course focuses on the politics in UK with units on People and Politics and Governing the UK. Second year options are agreed each year between the teacher and students on the course and can include: - UK political issues - EU political issues - Political ideologies - American politics - Global politics and political issues 43 You are likely to enjoy and do well in this subject if you are interested in how government works, enjoy discussing current issues and are good at developing logical, reasoned arguments. You will need to keep up - to - date with current events by reading quality newspapers and watching the television news on a regular basis, as well as doing independent research using the internet and other sources. Assessment is through written exams in each year, with a mixture of structured, short, mid - length and source response questions in the first year. The second year has mid - length questions and essays. This A Level is likely to be especially useful if you are thinking about going on to related university courses such as; politics, international relations, history and public policy, but the skills you will learn, such as thinking and writing clearly and logically and interpreting and evaluating evidence, will be useful in a wide range of other subjects as well. They will also help you in a variety of careers such as in the civil service, law or journalism.
