Choosing French will encourage you to develop an interest and enthusiasm for the culture of France and French-speaking countries as well as social, political and environmental global issues. It will help you to improve your understanding of the language and to use it confidently for a range of purposes. You should have an interest in the country and be able to access authentic French outside of class via the internet, DVDs and television. You should be willing to justify your ideas during class discussions and in written essays, and enjoy working both independently and in a group. In the first year, you will study a range of topics including: the world of advertising, television, the Internet, cinema, music, fashion, healthy and unhealthy lifestyle, family, marriage and relationships. You will also gain a deeper understanding of grammar. In the second year, you will study a range of topics including the environment, conservation, immigration, racism, wealth and poverty. You will also have the opportunity to study a French film, book, play, an aspect of French history or a region of France. You should be able to carry out your own research on cultural topics and conduct your own wider reading.
