What will I learn on this course? • This is new linear A level and there will be three exams at the end of Year 13. • The first unit deals with how markets work and why they sometimes fail. You will learn about: economic methodology and the economic problem; individual economic decision making; price determination in a competitive market; production, costs and revenue; different market structures: perfect competition; imperfectly competitive markets and monopoly; the labour market; the distribution of income and wealth; poverty and inequality; the market mechanism; market failure and government intervention in markets. • You will also study macroeconomics (the branch of economics which deals with the economy as a whole); you will learn about how the economy works; how we measure economic performance; economic policy; how financial markets and banks work; and the international economy. • There will be three exams, each lasting two hours: Units 1 and 2 are assessed in the same way: you will have to answer one data response question from a choice of two and one structured essay from a choice of three. Unit 3 has no specific new content, but will bring together your knowledge of the whole course. There will be 30 multiple choice questions and an extended writing activity asking you to apply your knowledge to a specific scenario.
