A-level Use of Mathematics

UPDATED 20150930 11:18:56

This course provides an opportunity to study Mathematics for those who enjoy or need Mathematics beyond GCSE but who do not require the traditional full A-level Mathematics qualification to pursue their future career. The course develops understanding and resourcefulness in the use of mathematics and covers the mathematics required to support all Science subjects, Psychology, Geography, and other subjects at A-level and beyond. The course consists of 6 equally weighted units. ALGEBRA You will model real data with appropriate functions and investigate functions commonly used to model practical situations using graphing and analytical techniques. DATA ANALYSIS You will learn about statistical measures and diagrams and develop an understanding of key ideas about the distribution of data, the use of important statistical models, and about correlation and regression. DECISION MATHEMATICS This has become popular in recent decades because of its applications to computer science. Many of the problems involve optimisation (finding an efficient solution) and hence methods are applicable to many real world situations. USE 2 This is a controlled assessment only module which consists of two pieces of coursework based on the Algebra and Decision Mathematics units studied in Year 12. This usually takes place during the summer term and is completed before the summer break. CALCULUS You will learn differentiation, integration and solving differential equations. As well as learning the techniques themselves you will learn to use them to analyse, make sense of and describe real world situations and to solve problems. You will also investigate the use of numerical methods to find gradients and evaluate integrals and compare these with analytic methods. MATHEMATICAL COMPREHENSION In their study of this unit students will build on the mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding they developed in the Algebra and Calculus units.
