THE STUDY OF GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS is not only about what happens at national level but rather seeks to analyse and evaluate a wide range of political institutions, processes and behaviour; political arguments and explanations; and the relationship between those institutions, processes, ideologies, concepts, behaviour and values at national, local and international level. Students will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of the political systems of both the UK and the USA. CO N T E N T This A-level will encourage students to develop: • Knowledge of contemporary political structures and issues in their historical context, both within the United Kingdom and globally • A critical awareness of the changing nature of politics and the relationships between political ideas, institutions and processes • An understanding of the influences and interests which have an impact on decisions in government and politics • An understanding of the rights and responsibilities of individuals and groups • The ability to critically analyse, interpret and evaluate political information to form arguments and make judgments • An interest in, and engagement with, contemporary politics Students on this course will study: • Government and political participation in the UK • The European Union • Political ideas (Socialism, Liberalism etc) • Comparative politics: government and politics of the USA • Global politics The course will be assessed by 100% examinations.
