A-level English Literature

UPDATED 20161004 15:11:33

The English Literature A-level course enriches human experience and gives you a further insight into our marvellous heritage of literature. It involves you in a very positive way – researching, evaluating, discussing and responding to the prose, poetry and drama you read. The specification includes works by both contemporary writers and those from the past, including Shakespeare. Students will be expected to read widely and independently, to do research on writers and their backgrounds and historical period and to contribute to a range of class activities, including seminars and discussions. Apart from studying set texts, there will be time given to practical analysis and criticism as well as to background research. There will be opportunities, in the coursework element, for individual choice of texts and assignments. The required skills at the start of the course are to be able read texts closely and analyse them critically, to be able to carry out independent research which helps form personal responses and to plan and write essays. CONTENT Students follow the AQA English Literature Specification B syllabus. In Year 12, students study a range of literary texts under the genre of Tragedy which they will be assessed on in Paper 1 of their Year 13 ‘A’ Level examination. In Year 13, students study Crime and again, study a range of literary texts which show aspects of that genre. This content is examined on Paper 2 in Year 13. There is an element of coursework which allows students to write critically about texts, incorporating their increasingly knowledge of Literary Criticism. The exam board provides an Anthology of critical texts, from which students are encouraged to read and embed in their work in this coursework and in their assignments as the course develops into Year 13.
