English Literature

UPDATED 20161104 22:09:17

Covering a selection of poetry, prose and drama texts from at least five hundred years of English Literature, this course will provide students with the opportunity to gain an understanding of the writing and the social contexts that produced it. At AS Level, students will complete a unit entitled ‘Love Through the Ages’. The course introduces students to the ways in which literary texts explore the theme of love over a very broad time period. Students study four core texts: a Shakespeare play, two novels and an anthology of poetry which are all studied for the examination. Students are also required to study a selection of wider reading materials from a list provided by the examination board in order to best equip them for the demands of the examination. At A2, students develop knowledge gained at AS Level through an extended version of the AS exam which requires them to respond to unseen poetry, rather than an anthology, and select their own texts in order to answer a theme-based question on prose and poetry. They will also study a further unit entitled ‘Texts in Shared Contexts – Modern Times: Literature from 1945 to the Present Day’. ‘Texts in Shared Contexts’ forms the second exam component of the course and requires students to respond to one set text (TBC), one unseen extract of either prose, poetry and drama, analysing the presentation of a theme in each as well as drawing links between the use of language, form and structure in the texts.
