WHAT IS PHYSICS? Physicists have enquiring minds, and study everything around them. From the smallest particles in the Universe to the largest Galaxies, Physicists attempt to explain what makes them ‘tick’ and how they fit together. WHY STUDY PHYSICS AT A/S-A LEVEL? The first reason must be that you have already enjoyed studying Physics as part of your dual award course, or as a separate subject at GCSE. You will have met some of the applications of Physics, and know how useful the subject is to us all. You should want to study some of these ideas further, and then move on to the more advanced concepts that explain the behaviour of our universe in greater detail. A second reason for the study of Physics is that it is a very logical subject, and trains you to approach problems in a methodical way. This ability is a valuable skill in the modern world, and will be useful to you in any future career whether directly related to physics or not. A third reason for studying Physics is the wide-ranging nature of the subject, with relevance to many future career paths. An understanding of the scientific theory behind technological developments can make innovation more flexible and versatile.
