The course will focus mainly on the Twentieth Century, studying how countries such as Britain, Russia and Germany developed over time. You will examine the significance of key figures, for example, Churchill, Lenin and Hitler and the impact of different political systems such as democracy, communism and fascism. A major part of the course will concentrate on how ordinary people were affected by change depending on their gender, ethnic origin or social class. You will also consider how these developments affected the world with a study of the clash of the two superpowers, the USA and Russia, during the Cold War. History is not simply learning facts about the past however. To be a historian you have to engage in some ‘detective’ work, piecing together the evidence from sources such as newspapers, speeches and letters written at the time as well as consulting other historians’ works. The course will also focus on helping you to develop these research skills so that you can find out things for yourself.
