What will I learn? The course is designed around developing your knowledge of biology, your practical skills and your understanding of the way biologists work. We will give you opportunities to see how biology is used in the world of work and how it is applied to other areas of your studies. You will have opportunities to use ICT and to use our extensive range of practical equipment.How is the course structured? There are 8 topics covered during the course1 Biological molecules2 Cells3 Organisms exchange substances with their environment4 Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms5 Energy transfers in and between organisms6 Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments7 Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems8 The control of gene expressionHow will I study? Activities will include group work, discussion, investigation and practical study. We suggest that for every lesson completed, time should be spent reviewing the work and finishing exercises at home.How will I be assessed The course is assessed by three exams, one covering the first four topics, one covering the final four topics and a final synoptic exam focussing on practical techniques, analysis and an essay question. In addition a separate practical skills mark will be awarded based on practical work carried out throughout the course.
