The course is made up of eight units. Six are compulsory and students choose two out of four optional units. The compulsory units are: Music Production Techniques - Students will learn about specific recording equipment, how to set it up, capture audio in a multi-track recording system and create an effective mix; The Sound and Music Industry - Students will learn about jog roles within a chosen industry related to sound and music, they will also create a business plan for a product or service; Listening Skills for Music Technologists - Students will listen to different music and be able to analyse the sonic qualities in the capture and comment on possible flaws; Planning and Delivering a Music Product - This follows on from “Music Production Techniques” but there will be a greater emphasis on what is required to produce a recording that is commercially viable including financial implications; Sequencing Systems and Techniques - This is where students will be asked to recreate piece of music or song using midi and audio sequencing software;Special Subject Investigation - Students will choose a topic related to sound and music and design and undertake a research project on their chosen topic. Students then choose two from: Composing Music - Students will create a portfolio of compositions that will be technology based. Students will learn about conventions, devices and structural formats for effective composition; Music and Sound for the Moving Image - Students will learn to create both musical and non-musical sonic elements to accompany moving image of film, advert stills or art; Live Sound Techniques - Students will gain skills in setting up audio equipment (PA, microphones etc.) for a live performance situation. They will learn about fold-back speakers and separate on-stage mixes; Sound Creation and Manipulation - In this unit students will learn how to create their own sounds using synthesis using parameters such as envelopes, filters, LFOs and effects.
