French Language & Culture

UPDATED 20151223 12:41:28

This course is for anyone who is intermediate and above and wants to maintain their fluency, whilst developing their knowledge of the culture. You will develop your ability to use the language in a wide variety of situations. The friendly and relaxed atmosphere will build your confidence on this stimulating and practical course. You will also learn about French culture and traditions. You will work on pronunciation and towards using language in a range of familiar situations such as home life, work, health, travel etc. You will take part in conversations, giving and justifying opinions, and using past, present and future tenses. You will be able to follow much of what is said to you at near normal speed on familiar matters. You will be able to understand the gist of authentic texts and be able to write letters or emails requesting or giving straightforward information. You will continue to learn strategies to help you become a more independent language learner and increase your competence in a different cultural setting. There will be a variety of activities including: listening to audio or video clips, speaking in pairs or small groups, short written exercises to practise language structures and vocabulary, short reading comprehensions, memory games and pictures to help you acquire new vocabulary, class surveys, role plays and, where possible, use of resources available on the internet. Your teacher will monitor your progress as you complete activities on the course and give you feedback on how to improve. You will also be encouraged to assess your own progress and discuss this with your teacher. You may wish to consolidate the language by joining an informal 'meet-up' which is run independently to WAES. The Lighthouse in Wolverhampton also holds Language Cafes which are more informally organised.
