Learn Fashion and Dressmaking for Beginners

Make garments that fit. You will learn to select an appropriate pattern, take accurate body measurements and adapt patterns to fit your figure. Techniques will include estimating fabric quantities and how to layout the pattern pieces correctly with the least amount of fabric waste. You will learn the meanings of pattern markings and how to transfer them to the fabric and how to cut, stitch, fit and press a garment accurately. You will learn basic sewing techniques using hand stitches as well as a sewing machine and over-locker in order to assemble your garment. Projects could include dresses, skirts, trousers, blouses, jackets and other garments. This course provides learners with the basic knowledge and skills to progress to a higher level of study within this or other art and craft disciplines. This is a practical course. You will learn through: tutor demonstration and presentation, independent practical activities, research to develop ideas and knowledge, and by producing a portfolio of evidence. Your tutor will give you verbal feedback during each lesson and written feedback at regular intervals. Throughout the course you will discuss with your tutor what you want to achieve and record it on your individual learning plan (ILP). You will decide with your tutor how long it will take to achieve your goal. This course is non-accredited. This course will provide you with the basic knowledge and skills to progress to a higher level of study within this or other art and craft disciplines. You may want to broaden your skills.
