Award in Mentoring Level 1

This introductory award enables students to understand the role of a mentor and to become aware of the skills needed to become an effective mentor: Role of a mentor, Effective communication and listening skills, Confidentiality, Developing confidence. Attendance is for one session of three hours per week for 18 weeks and regular attendance is a requirement of this course. This course is a real confidence booster if you have been out of education for some time. Not only will you gain skills that you can use with your own family, but you will have the experience of learning in an adult environment. The course aims to help you to gain an insight into the role of a mentor and to be clear about mentor/mentee relationships. It helps you to become aware of the specific skills and understanding you will need in order to be a mentor and to ensure that you follow good practice. It will also help you to build confidence and to be able to review your own learning and work performance. Classes include a variety of activities such as taught sessions and discussion, workshops, research and individual assessments. You will be expected to attend regularly between the start and end dates of each term and to achieve at least one unit of your qualification each term to secure further enrolment. Your teacher will be on hand to support you throughout the course. For the mentoring aspect of this course, your progress will be assessed through the practical tasks and activities recorded in your own Individual Learning Plan. Targets for achievement will be agreed with your teacher. You will receive an NCFE Level 1 Award in Mentoring if you achieve all the required units.
