AQA Level 3 Advanced GCE in Archaeology

UPDATED 20150929 13:25:01

Archaeology is all about studying mankind's past through the investigation of material remains. By studying where people lived, what they ate, what they wore and even how they died, you can put together a picture of societies throughout the ages. There are so many skills involved that you'll find archaeology a fascinating area of study. There's art (like using decorative styles of pottery to identify where they made things), technology (like carbon dating), geography (understanding the lay of the land in times gone by), history (known events, like wars), religious studies (where people gathered together) and classical civilisation (understanding people and cultures in the past). Archaeology can open the door to a surprising number of career options. Of course you might go on to study the subject at university with a view to doing fieldwork and specialising in a particular period or topic. But knowledge of archaeology can also be useful in other jobs, like tourism & heritage, town and contry planning, environmental science or local government. It could even support your ambition to become a forensic scientist. Wilsthorpe is one of very few schools nationwide that offers this qualification. The course is split into 4 modules over the 2 year course. For the AS first year we study how we understand ancient religion and ritual from the observation of material remains in the Prehistoric period. This includes a careful analysis of 5 key sites of the period as well as various other examples. The 2nd AS module revolves around the study of the methods of archaeological research in particular how we identify sites and record them. The 4 modules include one on the World Archaeology where several global sites are discussed, investigated and interpreted and one set as a coursework piece where the student conducts an independent investigation of a site of their choosing.
