Students can pursue their interests and develop their skills in a wide range of practical drama elements including acting, directing, costume, setting, mask and technical design. The course offers the chance to explore the structural elements of theatre from page to stage. In order to be successful and enjoy this subject, students will need to have a keen interest in the history of drama and study the practitioners, theatrical forms and conventions that make theatre such an exciting and valuable subject. Lessons are a combination of practical learning supported by academic theory needed in order to understand the work being studied. Learning takes place through practical workshops, researching background material on a playwright, contextual research (social/cultural/historical), performance rehearsals, participating in improvisation, devised work and class discussion. A commitment to additional rehearsal time is prerequisite to being successful on this course, especially when working on productions. There is a large workload so students need to be organised and have a dedicated and hard working approach in order to be successful in both practical and written assignments. At AS students perform an extract from any play to illustrate their understanding of an influential director, designer, theatre company or practitioner. At A2, students devise Drama on a theme or topic to be performed in a theatrical style of their choice.
