This qualification provides a broad basis of study for the health and social care sector and is designed to support progression into employment, apprenticeships and higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels. There are 4 units in total, 3 of which are mandatory: Unit 1 Human Lifespan Development, Unit 2 Working in Health and Social Care and Unit 6 Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs. Optional units can be chosen from: Sociological Perspectives, Psychological Perspectives, Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs or Physiological Disorders and their Care. Students are required to build a portfolio of assignment evidence which may be in the form of essays, reports, video presentations or practical tasks. Some students may wish to take the smaller Certificate in Health and Social Care (+ 0.5 of an A Level) or extend their Health and Social Care studies onto the Foundation Diploma (= 1.5 A Levels). All the courses give access to a vast range of potential careers at all levels within the Health or Social Care sectors. Past students have gone onto study Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Primary Teaching, Social Work and Creative Arts Therapy at university. Others have progressed onto apprenticeships such as a Dental Nurse, Business Administrator or other courses such as Nursery Nursing or straight into employment as a carer in a specialist Dementia unit. However the skills learnt are often just as relevant to careers outside the Health or Care sector.
