GOVERNMENT & POLITICS AS: Have you ever wondered who makes the decisions that decide how your life is shaped? Have you ever watched the news and wondered what they were on about? Have you ever had strong opinions about something? Have you ever felt out of your depth in conversations with adults? Do you want to learn how to express your views? Are you fascinated by current affairs? At AS the course focuses on the people and politics of Britain. You will find out how our country is run and how people take part in shaping the decisions that decide how the people of this country live their lives. There is no need to worry that you know nothing, many students who have begun the course with little knowledge have gone on to gain a grade A. In Unit 1 we look at ‘People and Politics’ and the year begins with a look at the current state of politics. We then look at how the British political system works and ask questions such as: What is democracy? What are the strengths and weaknesses of British Democracy? We consider whether or not our electoral system be reformed and explore the beliefs of the British political parties. We look at pressure groups, how they work, their importance in our political system and the role of the media in politics. Unit 2 the focus is on governing the UK. We look at the rules that govern how Britain is ruled and consider what there is to stop the government being little more than an elected dictatorship as well as asking important questions such as how powerful is Parliament? Can it stop the government doing what it wants or is it controlled? Has the power of the Prime Minister grown so much that he is in fact now an almost presidential figure?
